Episode 50 | Ministry to Refugees

The terms refugee, asylum, humanitarian have been in the headlines a lot lately. However, refugees aren’t new to America, specifically the DMV and that refugee population have needs. The question before us today is do we as Christians have a biblical obligation or call to meet the needs of that population. Jill Carmichael and Lora Batterson from National Community Church joined the show to talk about their unique outreach to refugees.

Jill Carmichael

Jill was born and grew up in Southern California and is always missing the beach. She graduated from Westmont College with a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Jill has been living in DC for 9 years and is a licensed social worker. Most recently she has been focusing on ending homelessness but has worked on many issues including: mental health, addictions, at risk youth, domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS.

Jill has loved joining the NCC team where she can bring together her faith and passion for justice as she oversees and works with all local missions.

Lora Batterson

Lora and her husband Mark, moved to Washington, DC in 1994 to direct an inner-city ministry. In 1996 her husband Mark became lead Pastor of National Community Church. Mark and Lora live on Capitol HIll and have three children: Parker, Summer and Josiah.
